Vegan General Tso's Tofu

Lovers of Chinese cousine will fall in lovw with this recipe. With this recipe you can prepare classic General Tso's Tofu vegan, using fried tofu. It's a very easy recipe. This is a gluten-free version.

Ingredients

For tofu:

  • 1 pack firm or extra firm tofu
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (or other neutral oil)
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch

For sauce:

  • 3 tbsp tamari sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp agave or maple syrup
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp ginger minced
  • 3 cloves garlic peeled and finely chopped or minced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 red or green hot chili pepper finely chopped
  • water to thin

To serve:

  • 1 broccoli steamed, cut in florets
  • 1 cup rice boiled
  • 1 red capsicum sliced
  • 1 bunch spring onion (only green part) chopped
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Drain excess water from tofu by using a tofu press or wrap tofu in a paper cloth and place it under something heavy. Leave it for a few minutes (10-15 minutes).
  • Meanwhile, prepare your sauce. Mix all the ingredients and set it aside. Cut tofu into cubes and coat each cube in cornstarch. Heat neutral oil in a skillet and place cubed tofu. Fry it from all sides until crispy and golden. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, fry broccoli and red capsicum for a few minutes until it gets tender. You can also eat it raw.
  • Add fried tofu and sauce to a skillet and mix everything together. Cook for 3-5 minutes. 
  • Divide general tso's tofu in two bowls, sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped spring onion. Enjoy!
