Making this vegan ‘tuna’ salad will satisfy your seafood-craving buds for sure. Did you know that masked chickpeas really resemble tuna? It has a similar consistency, texture, and colour. With the help of other vegan ingredients, you will easily prepare a fake tuna salad that tastes as good as regular tuna salad!
Ok, I won’t lie. I am only a human, as well as all of you. Sometimes, for no particular reason, I crave fish. Mostly tuna. Should I be ashamed of it? No, I shouldn’t. But I always make sure I eat something else that is vegan instead.
And for this reason, just in case that you will ever find yourself in the same situation, I made this vegan ‘tuna’ salad. Made of chickpeas, this salad will give you heaps of protein (just like eating tuna would). Plus, adding a nori sheet will give this vegan ‘tuna’ salad the right fishy taste. Oh, and it will smell like seaweed (or fish)!
I promise you, you won’t miss or crave tuna or any other fish after trying this amazing ‘tuna’ chickpeas salad! It has all you need. It’s simple, easy, quick, and it uses only ingredients you always find around the house.
What ingredients do you need?
- Chickpeas: buy regular canned chickpeas. It usually weighs around 400g which should be enough for making a salad for 2-3 people. Rinse and drain your chickpeas before using.
- Vegan mayonnaise: Vegan mayo will add the right consistency just like you would eat tuna. It also adds yummy taste! Have you tried Hellmann’s Vegan Mayo yet?? Absolutely delicious!!
- Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is always the best choice to make a yummy, fresh dish that is full of flavour. Lemon juice adds extra sour taste! Make sure you use 100% pure lemon juice.
- Onion: ou would use chopped red or white onion for regular tuna salad too, so why no use it in this recipe??
- Nori sheets: 1 or 2 nori sheets can totally change the taste of this ‘tuna’ salad! They have a quite strong fishy scent and taste, and that’s exactly what we need here!! Chopped your nori sheets well so you don’t chew a little too big pieces!
- Dill: freshly chopped or dried dill always goes soooo well with fish like salmon or tuna, so it will truly evoke fishy taste in this ‘tuna’ chickpeas salad!
- Salt/Pepper
Serving suggestions
Thi chickpeas ‘tuna’ salad can be served in way possible, just like you would serve regular tuna salad (with real fish)! One easy way is to eat just like that, by itself. This chickpeas salad has a lot of flavour, sour, fishy, seaweed… So you could enjoy these strong flavours all together!
You can easily spread this salad on a loaf of your favourite bread (wholegrain, gluten-free…), on a bagel, wrap, a salty cracker…
My favourite of serving this delicious ‘tuna’ chickpeas salad is to make a sandwich or toast !! I usually use gluten-free bread slices and add other ingredients, such as fresh sliced avocado, tomatoes, baby spinach leaves, coriander (cilantro) leaves, and sprouts. So YUM!!

Vegan ‘Tuna’ Chickpeas Salad
Ingredients
To make 'tuna' salad:
- 1 can chickpeas rinsed and drained
- 1 small red or brown onion chopped
- 1/2 cup vegan mayonaisse
- juice from 1 large lemon freshly squeezed
- 1 nori sheet1) chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh or dried dill chopped
- salt/pepper
To assemble a sandwich:
- 1 tomato sliced
- 1 avocado sliced
- handful baby spinach leaves
- sprouts
- coriander leaves
- spring onion (only green part) chopped
- 6 loafs of favourite gluten-free bread
Instructions
- Mash chickpeas with a fork until it resembles tuna and there are no big lumps.
- Add remaining ingredients for a salad and stir to combine.
- Add salt and/or pepper to adjust the taste according to your liking.
- Spread on a slice of your favourite bread or make a sandwich, using the suggested ingredients. Enjoy cold!
