A not long time ago, I posted the recipe for amazing Raw Vegan Nut Doughnuts With Pink Raspberry Icing. Yes, those were absolutely amazing and saved me a lot of effort and time because they were raw. Plus, I don’t have to be worried about burning them (which has happened to me before!). But this time, my friends, I want to share with you my unique recipe for vegan cocoa doughnuts! They are baked, yes, but they are also very easy to make!
If you are a chocolate lover, you will truly enjoy these cute and sweet vegan cocoa doughnuts. They are all covered with amazing vegan dark chocolate (I used this dark chocolate from Coles. It’s my favourite chocolate for cooking and if you live in Australia, you most definitely should try it!). I mean, they are sweet but not oversweet which is very important!
More important, you don’t have to feel guilty of eating chocolate, especially dark chocolate. It has many health benefits for you! Good quality dark chocolate can actually improve your health! It can help stabilize blood sugar, control your appetite or reduce your cravings for sweets. Therefore, eating dark chocolate can result in weight loss!
You can also swop white or cane sugar for coconut sugar (which I used in this recipe myself). It’s tastier than classic sugar and also healthier. It contains vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron. Moreover, it’s packed with antioxidants and contains 14 amino acids. These play an important role in preventing some common disease and even cancer!
I also had a lot of fun with making a colourful drizzle for them. They are many ways how to manage some pretty colours for your cocoa doughnuts.
Firstly, you can use a simple food colouring. This is a very simple way how to achieve some very deep and bright colours. However, this food colouring might be a little bit chemical which is probably something that some people would refuse to use. If you are not afraid of ‘artificial’ food colouring, go ahead and use it! The only rule here is to check your food colouring for some ‘hidden’ animal products. Sometimes you can only guest that ingredients are all plant-based. Sadly, that’s not always the case.
Occasionally, chemical food colouring might contain some animal products, such as gelatine, casein, isinglass, and others. Check especially for a red colour as it’s widely known for its main ingredient carmine which is derived from tiny red parasitic scale insects.
If you live in Australia, I recommend you to use these simply accessible food colourings from Coles. If you live somewhere else, always check all ingredients which your chemical food colouring contains.

These cocoa doughnuts are absolutely vegan and if you use rice flour like I did, they are also gluten-free!
Vegan Cocoa Doughnuts With Chocolate and Colourful Drizzle Recipe
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Servings: 6 large doughnuts, 8 small doughnuts
Ingredients:
For doughnuts:
1 cup rice flour
1/3 cup coconut sugar or cane sugar
3 tbsp raw cocoa powder
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp maple syrup (you can skip this for if you want your doughnuts less sweet)
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/3 cup almond milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tbsp coconut oil, melted
For chocolate drizzle:
50 g dark chocolate at least 70% (I used Belgian dark chocolate 85%)
A few tsp coconut milk
For colourful drizzle:
1/2 cup icing sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp coconut milk
3-4 different food colours (I used green, blue, and yellow)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius.
- In one bowl mix together all dry ingredients (rice flour, coconut sugar, baking soda, baking powder, sea salt, coconut powder). In another bowl mix together all liquid ingredients (apple cider vinegar, milk, vanilla extract, coconut oil, and maple syrup, if using).
- Make a well in the centre of mixed dry ingredients and slowly pour mixed wet ingredients, stirring constantly so no lumps will make. If the batter is too thick, add just a little bit more milk. The batter should be not too thick but not too runny either.
- Pour the batter in doughnut moulds and place them in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes. Then remove from the oven and let the doughnut cool down a little bit.
- Meanwhile, the doughnuts are baking, prepare your chocolate and colourful drizzle. First, make colouring drizzle: mix together all ingredients and in 3-4 separated small bowls (it depends how many colours are using) add your food colourings.
- Start making chocolate drizzle when your doughnuts are mostly cooled. Carefully melt your chocolate by adding it in a heatproof bowl placed above a pot with hot water. Constantly stir chocolate and slowly add coconut milk. When doughnuts are completely cooled down, dip doughnuts in melted chocolate and cover them from all sides. Set them aside and let the doughnuts cool down again.
- Drizzle your chocolate doughnuts with different colours and set them aside.
- Enjoy!
