Oh, dear jackfruit! How much I love jackfruit! After my first attempt at making “pulled pork” jackfruit burgers (vegan and gluten-free, of course), I didn’t give up the idea of having another jackfruit burger. This time, I created peanut butter jackfruit burgers! They turned out to be a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy, too (if you add more chili flakes).
Jackfruit is a huge thing among fellow vegans. Why? It’s quite simple. Jackfruit has recently become quite popular among vegans. Over the last year, its popularity increased by 131%. Some call a jackfruit a miracle for vegans.
Firstly, jackfruit has a texture very similar to pulled pork (or meat in general). That means you can use pulled jackfruit just like meat-eaters use pulled pork for their recipe including meat. You won’t be able to tell the difference from a picture! That similar it is!
Secondly, vegans and vegetarians use jackfruit as a substitute for pulled pork because of its taste. Jackfruit has a very distinguishing, meaty and juicy flavour. Not all vegans don’t eat meat because they don’t like the taste. The chose not to eat meat for other reasons. So why not use something which reminds meat so much?
Jackfruit is considered to be a fantastic substitute for the meat, especially for tacos filling (did you try my Easy Vegan Jackfruit Tacos already???), pulled pork sandwiches or burgers. When it’s unripe, it has no strong flavour and it can be easily mixed with other herbs or spices.
It is also very versatile and easy to prepare. Jackfruit is extremely valuable among vegans and particularly among vegans who just start out a vegan diet because the strong “meaty” taste of jackfruit resembles real meat a lot.
If you are new to a vegan lifestyle and you struggle to give up meat completely, try to incorporate recipes using jackfruit. This will help a lot to get you through the first hard times in the beginning! GUARANTEED!!
And here I get to another part of this recipe which is sweet peanut butter sauce. I freaking love peanut butter. I could eat tons of it, straight from a jar! If you are like me, then you will love this sweet peanut butter jackfruit burger!
Try to use smooth peanut butter as it makes a better, amazing, and very yummy creamy sauce. Your peanut butter might or might not contain sea salt (or salt in general). If you wish to have your peanut butter sauce sweeter, add more than recommended 1 tablespoon maple syrup.

To assemble these amazing peanut butter jackfruit burgers, I used my own pickled red cabbage that just pairs so well with sweet peanut butter sauce. I also added sliced avocado, shredded lettuce, and of course, I used gluten-free buns as I wanted to keep this recipe gluten-free.
Ingredients
For jackfruit ‘meat’:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion peeled and chopped
- 3 cloves garlic peeled and finely diced
- 1 tbsp ginger paste
- 2 tbsp soy or tamari sauce
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp white rice vinegar
- 1 can jackfruit
- 1 tsp chilli flakes optional
To make burgers:
- 4 gluten-free buns
- shredded pickled red cabbage
- shredded lettuce
- avocado sliced
Instructions
- Drain jackfruit and set it aside.
- In a saucepan, heat olive oil. Add onion, garlic, and ginger paste. Sauteé for about 2 minutes, then add soy sauce, peanut butter, vinegar, and maple syrup. Sauteé for another 3 minutes.
- Add jackfruit. Try to break it with a wooden spatula or a cooking spoon in a saucepan so it resembles pulled pork. Cook for another 15 minutes. Add chili flakes, if using.
- Assemble your burgers: Toast your burger buns according to your liking. Add shredded lettuce, avocado slices, jackfruit mix and top it with shredded pickled red cabbage.
- Enjoy!
