Who doesn’t like burgers? In my opinion, in most of the vegan or vegetarian restaurants, burgers are on a big demand! I particularly have tried so many vegan burgers and gathered so much inspiration, that I decided to come up with my own vegan burger. Barbecue Black Bean Burger!
Why barbecue and black beans? Because I think this is an absolute BOMB! I always love barbecue flavour whatever food I eat plus I really love black beans. And I am sure I am not the only one who loves think combination!
Jump to RecipePrint RecipeThis BBQ black bean burger is a little throwback to my delicious and outstanding Vegan Pulled Jackfruit Burgers I made somewhen at the beginning of this recipe blog! This time, I went for beans!
Since I became vegan, I tend to eat a lot of beans and legumes. They are an amazing source of plant-based protein (not only for vegans) and they are low in calories and high in fibre, folate, potassium, iron, and magnesium! They are truly a great elixir of goodness! And you know what? Beans and legumes contain no cholesterol (unlike meat)!
Everyone loves burgers. So why not to take advantage of it and make a little bit healthier burger at home? Plus the popularity of plant-based burgers and a new healthier concept of fast food has been increasing over the last few years. Even McDonald’s launched their vegan burger McVegan!
Why should you make this burger? Because it’s:
- easy to make
- customizable
- simply so delicious
- nutritious
- smoky
- slightly spicy
For this recipe, it’s important to use a high-quality chipotle sauce as it can really enhance a smoky flavour of the black bean burger! For example, this chipotle sauce (double check if it’s vegan!) is absolutely gorgeous!
Do you want to keep this recipe gluten-free? Don’t forget to use gluten-free bread rolls! And, to make burger dough stickier, use cornstarch instead of wheat flour.
If you like to use different ingredients to make your burgers, you don’t have to follow the recipe strictly. Just use what you have at home! Capsicum, onion, lettuce, tomato, avocado… Just about anything you like to have in your burger! That’s what I love about this BBQ black bean burger – it’s fully customizable!
Barbecue Black Bean Burger
Ingredients
For black bean burger patties:
- 1 cup quinoa tricolour
- 1 can black beans rinsed and drained
- 1 yellow onion peeled and chopped
- 1/4 cup frozen corn kernels
- 3 cloves garlic peeled and chopped
- 1 cup spinach leaves rinsed and chopped
- 1 tsp sweet paprika
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- salt, pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup barbecue or chipotle sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- olive oil for frying patties
To make burgers:
- 4 gluten-free wholegrain bread rolls
- 1 large tomato sliced
- 1 large red onion sliced
- spinach leaves
- chipotle sauce
Instructions
- Bring 2 cups water to boil and add quinoa. Cook it about 10 minutes or until tender. Discard any remaining liquid and set aside to cool down.
- In a large bowl, mix well together onion, garlic, corn, black beans, spinach. Add cooled quinoa and all the spices, barbecue sauce, and tomato sauce. Taste it and add salt and pepper accordingly to your taste.
- Add cornstarch and mix it well with your hands. The mixture should be now sticky enough to hold together. With your wet hands, divide mixture into 4 pieces and make patties.
- In a frying pan, heat a little bit of olive oil on a medium to low heat. Place patties in the pan and fry them for 5 minutes on each side or until slightly golden brown. Add more oil if necessary. Cook the patties in two batches if your frying pan is not big enough.
- Make your burgers by adding ingredients in layers. Serve with chipotle sauce and/or fries.
- Enjoy!
